Community Medicine and Primary Care

The Department of Community Medicine and Primary Care is a department that brings affordable health care closer to the community through outreach programmes and collaboration with other governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The department has staff consisting of two (2) consultant public health physicians, 6 medical officers, 9 public health nurses, 10 community health workers, a dietician, administrative/clerical staff and health attendants.

  • Infant welfare Clinic with vaccine storage facilities

Services Provided

  • Provision of Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) services for patients with tuberculosis (TB).
  • Provision of Child Welfare Services and nutritional education for children (0 – 5 years).
  • Provision of immunization services for women of child-bearing age and children (0-24 months).
  • Provision of pre- and post-HIV/AIDS counseling and screening for clients. This takes place in both in-patient and out-patient settings on referral land in collaboration with other departments.
  • Management of HIV-AIDS with ARV therapy and treatment of related opportunistic infections.
  • Organizing health education programmes for groups of clients with similar or special needs e.g. PLHWAs.
  • Organizing multi-disciplinary seminars on GB/HIV-AIDS co-infection to reduce friction, to provide cross-fertilization of ideas and to update the knowledge of hospital staff.
  • Organizing regular in-service training programmes for all cadres of staff according to their needs on health and preventive medical issues.
  • Community out-reach and Liaison Programmes to enlighten the members of the community, schools (School health Programme), and work sites (e.g. Industries, Motor parks/Garages/Mechanic villages, Markets, Brothels (Commercial Sex Workers {CSWs}) on preventive health related issues and sensitization on the services available in the hospital and how to use them.
  • Liaising with other health professionals (both within or/and without the hospital) in solving health problems.
  • Maintaining individual client records and reports of all procedures/activities.
  • Collation, processing and dissemination of data on the prevalent health problems (e.g. HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB) to the appropriate authorities.
  • Conducting operational research and evaluation towards solving educational and health problems.
