The Uplift Development Foundation, led by Dr. Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, wife of former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, has successfully flagged off the 14th edition of its breast and cervical cancer screening and advocacy program in Abeokuta.

Over 500 women across the state participated in the program, held at the Federal Medical Centre Idi-aba Abeokuta Telemedicine Hall.

At the event, Dr. Amosun emphasized the importance of regular self-screening and check-ups for early detection of breast and cervical cancer. She encouraged women to take charge of their health, citing the significance of early detection in reducing mortality rates.

Mrs. Amosun assured participants that her foundation would provide free treatment to those detected with the virus, stating that her husband, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, has covered the costs of surgery and treatment for all detected cases.

To date, she emphasized that over 10,000 women have benefited from the initiative since its inception 14 years ago.

The Acting Medical Director, Dr. Adekunle Adediran, represented by Dr. Olufisayo Odebunmi, appreciated Dr. Mrs. Amosun for the initiative, saying it is an act of preserving lives. He promised that the centre would continue to partner with organizations or individuals that prioritize humanity.

Consultant gynecologist Dr. Hameedah Abdulsalam identified risk factors, including multiple sex partners without contraceptives, smoking, and poor use of immune-boosting drugs. She encouraged participants to visit the right hospital for early detection.

Deputy Director of Nursing, Omowunmi Olatunji, demonstrated how to check for breast lumps and advised participants to perform self-examinations every three to five days after their monthly menstruation.

The wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abimbola Obasanjo, alongside other dignitaries, advised women to prioritize a balanced diet rich in vegetables, beans, and protein. She also emphasized the importance of regular medical examinations, exercise, and social interaction for overall well-being.

Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the program, stating that it has given them the opportunity to know their health status and provided succor to those with financial constraints.

The Uplift Development Foundation’s initiative underscores its commitment to improving healthcare in Ogun State, particularly for women. By providing free screenings and treatment, the foundation is making a tangible impact on the lives of thousands of women.
