The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has commended the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, for its high standard in integrating care for People Living with HIV (PLHIV), describing the facility as a national model for healthcare delivery.

The commendation came during an assessment visit on Tuesday, led by Dr. Jerry Gwamma, Deputy Director of Programmes at CDC Nigeria. The team met with Dr. Titilola Sarah Ibiyemi, the Centre’s pioneer female Medical Director, and toured the facility’s HIV care units.

Following the visit, the CDC noted that FMC Abeokuta’s approach to full integration of PLHIV services marks a significant leap in patient care and offers a replicable framework for health institutions across Nigeria.

“We are highly impressed by the quality of healthcare and system integration we have witnessed here,” said Dr. Obinna Ogbanufe, Lead Partner for Transition and Government Engagement at CDC. “The Centre has successfully transitioned from partial to full integration, including the CMPC framework under which the clinic operates and the treatment approach being implemented.”

Dr. Gwamma lauded Dr. Ibiyemi’s leadership in driving the integration, saying it aligns directly with national policy for HIV care systems. He also recognized Dr. Soyanwo, Head of Department, Community Medicine and Primary Care (CMPC), for sustained efforts to reduce stigma, and praised the CMPC staff for their dedication and teamwork.

In her response, Dr. Ibiyemi thanked the CDC and the APIN Public Health Initiatives team led by Pharm. Michael Ohue for their continued partnership. She reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to raising the bar on patient care.

“The Centre remains committed to elevating patient care standards and will continue to foster effective collaborations with our partners to ensure world-class healthcare delivery,” she said.
