FMC Abeokuta MD Reaffirms Support for Chemical Pathology, Calls for Improved Work Attitude

Tuesday, 14th April 2026.

The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Dr. Sarah Titilola Ibiyemi, has reaffirmed her commitment to staff welfare and the provision of essential resources to enhance healthcare delivery in the Centre.

Dr. Ibiyemi made this known during the 2026 Annual Public Lecture of the Department of Chemical Pathology and Immunology, held at  the Telemedicine Hall, with members of the Hospital Management Committee (HMC) in attendance.

In her address, she expressed her strong commitment to healthcare delivery, particularly recognizing the vital role of laboratory scientists and technicians, whom she described as being at the forefront of medical diagnosis.

“Chemical Pathology remains central to medical diagnostics. I am committed to ensuring that the department is well-equipped with the necessary materials to function effectively and deliver quality services,” she stated.

The lecture, themed “Laboratory Errors in Clinical Practice: Who is Responsible?”, brought together healthcare professionals to examine the causes of laboratory errors, their implications, and possible solutions.

Delivering the keynote lecture, the guest speaker, Dr. Waliu Oladosu, a Consultant Chemical Pathologist, noted that laboratory errors in clinical practice should not be blamed on any single individual. He explained that most of these errors occur at the pre-analytical stage of patient care, which in turn affects the analytical and post-analytical processes.

Dr. Waliu Oladosu emphasized the need for a system-based approach to minimizing errors rather than attributing blame.

Also speaking, the Head of Department, Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Dr. Kazeem Oderinu, expressed his appreciation for the presence and support of the Hospital Management Committee. He appealed for increased support and funding for the department to enable it to function effectively without delays or limitations.

Dr. Oderinu further stressed the need for adequate provision of test kits and reagents to ensure accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment of patients.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of merit awards to deserving medical professionals and administrative officers within the department in recognition of their dedication and contributions.

In her closing remarks, the Medical Director called for a positive change in work attitude among chemical pathologists and laboratory staff.

She emphasized that their role is critical to patient care, noting that many lives depend on the accuracy and timeliness of laboratory results.
