Discharge of Ogun protest stray bullet victim: A case of best practices in hospital management

A victim of a stray bullet during the recent protest over fuel and naira scarcity in Abeokuta, Michael Gabriel, has been discharged from the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta after 16 days in the hospital.
The 27-year-old victim, who was shot at Sapon during the protest, was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Our correspondent reported that the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, visited the patient and took over the hospital bill.
Gabriel, a father of two, was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

“He equally expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Health Commissioner, Dr Tomi Coker, for their concern, care, and financial support and more importantly for visiting him on his sick bed.”
The hospital’s Head, Public Relations and Information, Segun Orisajo, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, in Abeokuta.
Orisajo said, “Gabriel was rushed to the emerge ncy unit of the hospital unconscious on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, following a stray bullet that hit him when pandemonium broke out at Sapon in Abeokuta over protests against naira and petroleum scarcity.
“Speaking in an interview after his discharge from the centre, Gabriel was full of thanks to God, the team of doctors, nurses and other health workers that worked round the clock to save his life, and the Medical Director, FMCA, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu, for prompt mobilisation and the response of his personnel….
The hospital’s spokesman also quoted the medical director as describing Gabriel’s successful management, among several novel surgeries in the centre, as pointers to the imperativeness of transforming the centre into a teaching hospital.
“The latest professional manner in which we successfully managed the case of Gabriel gives us hope that this centre is on a worthy cause of becoming a teaching hospital,” he said.
