Celebration of World Orthopaedics Cast Technician and Technologists Day at FMC Idi-Aba Abeokuta.

The Director of Administration Federal Medical Centre Idi Aba Abeokuta Dr Exodus Kehinde Apanisile has described the plaster unit as indispensable, promising that the management will look into the manpower of the department. 

He said this at the lecture held to celebrate the World Orthopaedics Cast Technician and Technologist Day, Organized by the plaster unit of Orthopaedic and Traumatology at the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta.

The lecture was well attended by orthopaedic surgeons in the centre, the pioneer members, representatives from stakeholders, and sister hospital Neuropsychiatric, Aro, Abeokuta, patients, and training students, all of whom were present at the event.

Former Head of clinical Services Dr. Ojeblenu Felix, while declaring the lecture open, appreciated and celebrated the technicians and urged them to improve on the practice of orthopaedic casting and management of musculoskeletal trauma, collaborating to share modern knowledge to show their skills efficiently.

In his lecture, Dr. Nasirudeen Bello underscored the importance of orthopaedic professionals in correcting clubfoot (talipes equinovarus), using modern methods like fibreglass casting for immobilization of fractures, and other methods to manage fractures from accidents and other musculoskeletal-related issues.

In his goodwill message, the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Dr. Fadimu Abidemi, represented by Dr. Aremu Wahab, appreciated the perseverance and tenacity of the members of the department in providing orthopaedic care and urged them to continue to be good ambassadors of the centre.

Prof. Rotimi Ogungbe, a pioneer Doctor of the department, said, “The Orthopaedic department is my baby, and I am happy it is growing.” He commended the staff and called for the replacement of staff who have left, urging continued unity in the department for optimal delivery of orthopaedic services. He donated cash to the department as a mark of support.

Dr. Ganiu Isiaq, Dr.Kunle Ashimi, and the Representative of the Head of Nursing, Adebisi Abolade  all extolled the value of the unit and department at large in providing orthopaedic care, saying their value cannot be overemphasized. 

Patients could not hide their joy as they expressed satisfaction with the orthopaedic care from all quarters. One of the patients, Mr. Damilare Koleosho, said, “The day is celebrating healing and the hands behind it.” He expressed joy for what he described as excellent performance in quality health care regarding his orthopaedic treatment. He called for more research work, global access, and what recovery stands for in orthopaedic care.

In recognition of his contribution to orthopaedics, an award of excellence was presented to the pioneer doctor, Prof. Rotimi Ogungbe, while gifts were earlier presented to inpatients during a sensitization walk early in the morning in the centre. The celebration was wrapped up with menu and dance.
