RE: AWARD " YOUR REPORT IS MISCHIEVOUS, MISLEADING AND MALICIOUS; FMC ABK MANAGEMENT REPLIES PUNCH NEWSPAPER
Tuesday, 19th November, 2024
The Management of the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta has dismissed the Punch Newspaper’s report challenging the recent award of recognition given to it by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
The Punch, in its edition of Tuesday 19th November, 2024 contested the ” Best Customer Friendly and Environmentally Clean Hospital ” award given to the Centre by the Federal Ministry of Health citing some baseless and inconsequential arguments.
Reacting through its Spokesman, Dr Segun Orisajo, the Centre described as highly provocative and offensive the news report saying it was a premeditated and calculated attempt at pulling down the Centre.
” It is unthinkable that a respected news medium as Punch could throw caution to the wind by engaging in a one – sided story under the guise of investigative journalism
“In order to satisfy the reporter’s urge to deliberately tarnish the hard- earned and unblemished reputation of the Centre, he was said to have interviewed about ten make- belief respondents who never had anything good to say about the Centre.
” What percentage is that population size when put against our records of 106, 383 patients satisfactorily attended to between January 2024 and October 2024 and 676 deliveries with the same time among others.
” It is rather unfortunate that the reporter failed to distinguish accusations and allegations from culpability to which he was painting the Centre black.
” How professional it would have been if the reporter had painstakingly followed through all those allegations in which he was brandishing to the public as facts, especially findings from Law Courts and relevant Medical Professional Institutions on whether the Centre. had at any time been sanctioned by those trump up allegations of negligence and professional misconduct.
” More worrisome is the reporter’s attempt to popularize and glamorize uncultured and uncivilized actions of some of our patients and their relatives for their assault against our health workers which in most cases are unwarranted.
” The reporter had captured an incident in 2022 a follows
” The man hit the doctor in the head with a chair after losing his 15 months old daughter.
” He beat to a pulp the doctor who attended to his daughter citing delay in treatment”
” It is saddening that such a barbaric and uncivil actions that should be roundly condemned is being given undue attention by the reporter.
” If the reporter had cared to know, incidences of assault on health workers are mostly displacement of aggression by patients’ relatives especially when they failed to seek medical attention early, only to do so when it was almost late for any remedy medically as was the case of the father of the late toddler whose narratives are presented as follows:
“A 15 month old toddler was rushed to the Children Emergency Room (CHER) by her parents on Friday 12th March 2021 at about 8.00 pm.
“On presentation, the baby had a history of severe fever of one month, weight loss of one month, irritability, and loss of head control.
” On evaluation at the Centre, the baby was immediately taken in and necessary medical attention commenced.
“On complaints by the parents that they were financially challenged, the management waived all the laboratory investigation bills as well as emergency medications.
“However, at about midnight the baby passed on barely four hours after arriving at the Centre.
“On hearing about the death of his daughter, her father threw caution to the wind and beat to a pulp the Medical staff who attended to her daughter, citing delay in treatment.
“The enraged man hit the doctor on the head several times with a chair before help could come his way”.
Speaking on this unfortunate incident, the Medical Director, Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu sympathized with the bereaved family and attributed the loss of the toddler to late presentation.
“Something should have told the parents that keeping a baby that was losing weight with a sustained high temperature at home for a whole month was a dangerous thing to do by any parent.
” No doubt, we tried our best to save the toddler’s life, although the situation would have been a different one if she had presented early,” the Medical Director said.
“Unknown to the reporter, most of those aggrieved individuals regularly come back to the Management whenever they are in their good frame of mind to plead for mercy and leniency and write undertakings of good behavior while some of them are facing prosecution in law courts.
“The reporter had also castigated the hospital Management about ” shortage of beds, over- crowding and long waiting time” among others.
” The fact remains that the Federal Medical Centre is reputed for topnotch medical services, always the first choice of many people though with limited infrastructural facilities, thus the reason for the continuous rush for available bed spaces by our numerous patients
” Definitely, you won’t see such in any health facility with poor reputation.
“The administration of the current Medical Director, Prof Musa-Olomu is quite aware of the bed space challenge and had been working round the clock since assumption of office to resolve it.
” It is to this end that we plead with the Punch reporter to always endeavour to practice developmental and responsible journalism.
” If you cannot celebrate success and achievements anywhere you see one, then fold your hands instead of using your pen to destroy one.
” The late elder statesman, Prince Bola Ajibola in reciprocation of the timely intervention of our personnel when he had health challenge donated the present Ultramodern Trauma and Orthopeedic wards building to the Centre.
” Michael Gabriel the guy who was shut by stray bullets at Sapon, during the cashless policy, rushed to the Centre and brought back to life after receiving 7 pints of blood will be eternally grateful to the management and staff.
“The over 50 parents of those toddlers who recently successfully underwent corrective open-heart surgeries will always be grateful to the Centre.
” A note of warning must be sounded that the japa syndrome in the health industry will continue to soar with its devastating effects on every one of us unless we consciously and conscientiously make the atmosphere conducive for these professionals to work and avail Nigerians their professional expertise through encouraging media reportage.
From every indications, the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba deserved the Best Customer Friendly and Environmentally Clean Hospital award it recently received from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
RE: BEST ENVIRONMENTALLY CLEAN HOSPITAL AWARD: FMC ABK MANAGEMENT RUBBISHES CDHR'S CALL FOR WITHDRAWAL, SAYS IT'S BALDERDASH
Saturday November, 16, 2024.
The authorities of the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba, Abeokuta have described as balderdash call by the Committee for the Defence of the Human Rights (CDHR) on the Federal Government to withdraw the meritorious award it recently conferred on the Hospital.
The Centre, it would be recalled was last week awarded the Best Customer Friendly and Environmentally Clean Hospital by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to which CDHR is contesting.
The Hospital Management in a statement by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Dr Segun Orisajo described the CDHR’s reaction as baseless, mischievous and smacks of insensitivity to incontrovertible available empirical evidences, justifying the award.
“We wish to bring to the notice of CDHR that as far back as 2020, FMC Abeokuta had been adjudged as a friendly hospital and environmentally neat”.
“That’s why the head of Servicom team from the Presidency that assessed our services and environment in 2020, from where we emerged overall best FMC in Nigeria, Mrs Jummai Abdullah ate the food we served her and team members in our premises”
She disclosed after eating that; ‘I have never eaten in any hospital before because of the characteristic nature and smell in hospitals, “but” Your hospital is so neat and not smelly and environmentally friendly and neat, that’s why I ate”, She confessed.
Therefore, “the present assessment by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare isn’t a mistake. It’s just that we maintain our values and excellent attitudes to work”.
“If 2020 and 2024 assessments are the same, it means the selection process is transparent and effective as well as excellent, MORESO IF THE ASSESSMENTS are NOT BY THE SAME SET OF PEOPLE (they’re different)”.
“Hence we advise CHDR to get its facts right and stop insulting the sensibilities of the respected members of the public, our dedicated staff and teeming patients who are appreciative of the top notch health and medical services they received daily at our Centre”.
